UPI AutoPay
Also known as: UPI recurring payment · UPI subscription · NPCI AutoPay · UPI mandate
An India-specific payment mandate framework by NPCI that lets merchants charge recurring amounts up to Rs 1 lakh per month from a user's UPI handle, with one-time user approval.
In depth
UPI AutoPay is the retention infrastructure that made Indian consumer subscription SaaS viable below Rs 299 per month. Before AutoPay existed, recurring payments in India required the user to re-enter card details every month, which produced catastrophic churn at low price points — typically 60-70% after the first cycle.
The mandate flow is simple: the user approves a recurring debit limit (typically set a little above the subscription price for flexibility) from their UPI app. The merchant then debits automatically on the renewal date. The user can revoke anytime through their UPI app.
The providers that support UPI AutoPay in 2026 include Razorpay, Cashfree, PhonePe Business, Juspay, and a growing list of smaller fintech players. Razorpay's dashboard-native integration is the most common choice for early-stage consumer SaaS.
Formula & example
Rules of thumb
- Ship UPI AutoPay in week one of a consumer subscription product.
- Set the mandate upper limit slightly above the subscription price — allows for price tier changes without re-mandate.
- Test the failed-payment retry flow before launch; without it, churn re-enters through the back door.
- Display the mandate in the user's settings with a visible cancel option — required by NPCI and right for trust.
Common mistakes
- Postponing AutoPay to 'month three' — users churn before you ship it.
- Using card autopay instead of UPI — card failure rates in India are 3-5x higher than UPI.
- Setting the mandate limit exactly at the subscription price — blocks price changes without new mandate.

FAQ
Is UPI AutoPay available for all Indian banks?
Yes, across all UPI-participating banks as of 2026. Coverage expanded through 2022-2024 and is now effectively universal. Some older bank UPI apps still surface the mandate approval flow awkwardly, but the underlying rails work.
Can I set a UPI AutoPay mandate for an international user?
No. UPI AutoPay requires a UPI handle issued by an Indian bank. For international users, use card autopay through Razorpay or Stripe.
